LIS Congress 2011: Innovate. Collaborate. Revolutionize.
The University of the Philippines Library and Information Science Students’ Association, the UP Information Technology Training Center, Granny Goose and Coffee Twist presented the third LIS Congress at the UP NISMED Auditorium last January 15, 2011. The theme for this year’s congress was “Innovate. Collaborate. Revolutionize.” showing how librarianship evolved (Innovate) by bringing new fields of study; Collaborated among these intertwined disciplines; and Revolutionize the profession.
This year’s Congress was the biggest yet. Among those who attended are BLIS students from the Baliuag University, Centro Escolar University, Philippine Normal University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, University of the East and UP Diliman. Joining them are top high school students from selected public schools in Metro Manila as well as professional librarians.
Speakers included some of the leading names in the field of Library and Information Science: Mr. Chito Angeles, Prof. Vyva Aguirre, Dr. Johnny Buenrostro, Prof. Igor Cabbab, Ms. Lourdes Tenmatay David, Ms. Zarah Grace Gagatiga, Ms. Alma Prosperoso, Ms. Emma Rey, Atty. Antonio Santos, Mr. Janny Surmieda and Mr. Joseph Yap.
The UPLISSA first organized the first ever congress for the Library and Information Sciences for students by students in 2009, as part of its contribution to its beloved field. It is envisioned to be the premier gathering of students of Library and Information Science in the Philippines that would allow students to learn about the latest trends in their field, and to network with fellow students from different schools and some of the country’s leading information professionals. This year’s congress was also brought in part by St. Augustine Publications, LINAR Educational Materials and TJ Clear Art.
